กันยายน 8, 2009
Hi Im Doug Patt and this is how to architect. Today well learn How to write like an architect. The basic drafting tool for an architect when working by hand is a parallel rule. You can also use a t-square. Ill be using an ames lettering guide to create the lines for the lettering. First were going to create our horizontal lines using the lettering guide. The guide has a variety of spacing options to create just about any combination your looking for. I will also be using a small triangle …

as long as everyone can read what you write,..one don’t have to be that particular to the style of his/her handwriting,..a writing that is clear and an idea that make sense is enough,..i’m an architect

haha, good question, but I have a better answer..I’ve known 2 architects for decades,he writes exactly the way it shows here( LOL while i saw this), they never know any other way to write “unlike an architect’ , they were born with it.. gene? or maybe the written character DNA would make ‘em architect soon or later then, so to speak!

this is ridiculous. write however you want – caps, no caps, marker, pencil, computer. what ever happened to self expression

It’s a legacy of the trade. Blueprints used to be hand-drawn and lettered (not counting t-squares and triangles), these blueprints had to be flat-out legible.

this may seem like a stupid question but why do architects need to write differently?
19. SunnyUli | กันยายน 8th, 2009 at 11:50 am
I dont think he always writes like this
but for stuff like his port folio as he said, he wants it to be more stylish I guess…after all he is some kind of designer.

i really do appriciate an architects job but, is writing like this critical to being an architect. could you not just write normally; it would be much quicker and easier.

do architects actually write like this?
what a time consuming process, arent they supposed to design, and not perfect their handwriting?

As computers get better, this may be a moot point, but in past hand drawn curves could be better quality than computer pixel drawn ones. If operator was skilled in both hand drawing & computer, but couldn’t get computer to do exactly what s/he wanted, s/he could finish it faster by hand.

Thank you for your insight OPOC. I don’t see why it matters if handwriting is more “organic”. A computer’s print will be more legible. Professionals of all sorts simply need to learn to be more computer savvy. This includes understanding how to back up your work.
If you only have a napkin, you won’t be able to employ the above techniques…but I get your point.

You are making a BIG assumption, and that word is CAN! Even if you can, (1) hand lettering has an organic style no computer can match. But sometimes you CAN’T: (2) Your computer crashes, and you are on a deadline. (3) You are in a rural village in Africa with no electricity, no computer, and you have only a paper napkin to do a rough draft.

I don’t understand. Why bother using pencil and paper when you can use a computer?
